We think sometimes the true value of a quality product is overlooked. Ironmongery is a great example where the need for quality is often dismissed, ignored or compromised. Even though careful specification has been made at design stage it is usually one of the last things to be installed so is often the brunt bearer of final cost cutting when the project has went over budget.
Independent studies by PSA Research showed that whilst doors and ironmongery represent as little as 1% of a building’s cost, they can account for 80% of the total maintenance bill in practical use. This effect will inevitably increase as building owners are required to ensure that their doors comply with the latest guidance. Never has the phrase ‘you get what you pay for’ been more apt than with architectural ironmongery.
We see it regularly where a client is offered an alternative product, a lever handle for example that looks similar in appearance to the specified item but for half the price. Surely it’s too good to be true? Well, yes it is. Almost certainly manufactured from a lower grade steel with cheap plastic washers instead of bronze, low grade plastic inners instead of aluminium and inferior fixings. These finer details are the hidden workings that will affect the life span of the product and the maintenance costs of the building.
With our UK Manufactured T316 grade stainless steel Sirius range of ironmongery we offer a 25 year guarantee giving you complete peace of mind. We passionately believe in supplying the correct products for performance and aesthetic. If money is tight we are adept at value engineering to meet your budget whilst retaining a high ironmongery specification throughout.
When specifying Architectural Ironmongery there is rarely a one cap fits all solution for any project.
Most projects are unique and equally the ironmongery specification needs to be applicable to the varying needs and functions of the building. Today the knowledge of an Architectural Ironmonger goes beyond the simple ‘‘pull handle here, door closer there’ level and we are called upon to ensure the finer details of a specification are exactly correct. A wide depth of knowledge and experience is necessary to offer advice and solutions from discussing the correct application of automatic doors to explaining the advantages of anti-bacterial coating.
Questions such as ‘‘Does your door closer meet the requirements of the equality act?’’or ‘’Will your ironmongery be suitable for our PAS 24 door set?’’ are asked on an almost daily basis and we are always on hand to offer our expertise. It is rare that a simple yes or no answer is sufficient. When tasked we are keen to fully understand the issue, we will take a look at the drawings, discuss the usage of the building and in particular the function of the doors in question to offer a comprehensive solution.
Holding specification is, we believe, vital. Anyone can price a bill page two years down the line and undercut the original ironmongers price but do they understand or even care about the complexities of the building? No word of a lie, we were recently asked for a door closer for a hospital by a builder who told us ‘I don’t care if it falls off in a year as long as it gets past 12 months defects’. That could not happen with a correctly held specification from a responsible ironmonger.
We have worked on literally thousands of projects over a number of years where we have provided tailored ironmongery specifications throughout the UK and beyond and although we doubt that we have seen it all, we most certainly have the experience, knowledge, resources and appetite to continue to produce top level specifications to many more.
